Recently my wife and I went on a two week trip to the west coast. Part of the time was spent in San Francisco – our first significant time spent in a large city. We decided to use public transportation and walking to get around instead of our usual car rental. We stayed at a place on the corner of Van Ness and Broadway and would often walk one block over to the shops and restaurants on Polk street. It was there on the corner of Polk and Broadway, in front of the Walgreens that we encountered Jasper.
On our last night in San Francisco, I asked him if I could photograph him to which he agreed. After that we chatted with him for a bit, made a modest donation, and said goodbye. He seemed to be happy for the conversation and people expressing an interest in him. I heard that he has been on that same street corner for many years.
That was the last photograph I made in San Francisco and quite a deviation from the wildlife and landscape photography I usually do. But in a certain way, it was the most memorable for me because of the story behind it.
This image was taken on a recent trip to California. Taken from an overlook in Jenner, CA – just north of Bodega Bay.
